Marten Welcomes 2022 Summer Associate Class

Marten Law is pleased to announce the arrival of its 2022 Summer Associate class. After a rigorous selection process, this year’s class brings together five students from four different law schools, each with passion and dedicated interest in environmental and energy law.

Aidan Freeman, a 2L at Lewis & Clark Law School, is interested in environmental litigation, water quality, emerging contaminants, and greenhouse gas regulation. Aidan earned the Dean’s Scholarship for Excellence, is ranked in the top six percent of his class, and is a member of the Environmental Law Review. His prior legal work experience includes serving as a Law Clerk for the United States Department of Justice, and as a Legal Intern for the California Coastkeeper Alliance. Before law school, he worked as an editor and writer for various publications. Aidan received his B.A. in Philosophy, and the History of Mathematics and Science from St. John’s College. Aidan will be located in Marten’s Portland Office.

Caroline Jaschke, a 2L at Harvard Law School, is interested in air quality, clean water and water quality, and cleanup and cost recovery. Caroline is a subciter and published author on the Environmental Law Review, is the Environmental Justice Team Lead for the Mississippi Delta Project, and is the Professional Liaison for the Environmental Law Society. She also worked as a Law Clerk in the Environmental Protection Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Before law school, Caroline coordinated and managed clinical trials in the Multiple Myeloma Program of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Caroline received her B.A. (magna cum laude) in English and Neuroscience from Middlebury College. Caroline will be located in Marten’s Seattle Office.

Emma Lautanen, a 2L at Berkeley Law, is interested in water quality and water rights, natural resources, and toxics and emerging contaminants. Emma is the Publishing Editor of the Ecology Law Quarterly, she is a member of the Environmental Law Clinic, and moot court team. She also worked as Legal Intern with the Environmental Section of the California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General. Before law school, Emma was a legal assistant at an environmental law firm. Emma received her B.A. with high distinction in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Emma will be located in Marten’s Seattle Office.

Kameron Schroeder, a 2L at University of Oregon Law School, is interested in natural resources and endangered species, climate, and litigation. Kameron is an Oregon Merit Scholar Recipient, and the Co-Director of the Green Business Initiative and Public Interest Environmental Law Conference. He also worked as a Legal Intern for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Office of the General Counsel, and as a Law Clerk for the American Forest Resource Council. Before law school, Kameron was an Invasive Species Inspector. Kameron received both a B.S. and Master of Environmental Policy from Duke University, where he was valedictorian. Kameron will be located in Marten’s Portland Office.

Zachary Zahner, a 2L at Harvard Law School, is interested in renewable energy and clean up and cost recovery. Zach is an Assistant Online Editor for the Environmental Law Review, and a member of the American Constitutional Society. Zach also was a Legal Intern for the Environmental Protection Division within the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General. Before law school, he worked for a data company that advised energy companies on achieving their efficiency and sustainability goals. Zach received his B.A. in Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard College. Zach will be located in Marten’s Seattle Office.

Over the course of 10 weeks, the summer associates will participate in meaningful work in environmental litigation, energy transactions and regulatory matters. The students will have opportunities to connect with each other as well as mentors and the firm’s senior leadership.
